Top 10 Cancer Causing Foods

Nowadays, it seems like everything we eat, drink and do cause cancer. Therefore, it is hard to determine what to really stay away from. According to the World Health Organization around one third of cancer deaths are ascribed to the 5 leading behavioral and dietary risks: high body mass index, low fruit and vegetable intake, lack of physical activity, tobacco use, alcohol use.  Many cancers can be prevented by avoiding exposure to common risk factors, such as tobacco smoke. In addition, a significant proportion of cancers can be cured, by surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy, especially if they are detected early.

At least one-third of all cancer cases are preventable. So, healthy diet is essential for cancer prevention. A balanced diet can help the body get the nutrients it needs to function properly. Therefore, it is important to know what poses a risk and how to avoid it. Since our diet is made up of various foods and nutrients, and many of them affect the risk of cancer, it’s important to know which are the worst cancer-causing foods.

These 10 common food items are scientifically proven to increase the risk of cancers:

Genetically-modified Organisms (GMOs)

GMOs and the chemicals used to grow them have been shown to cause rapid tumor growth. However GMOs are everywhere, including in most food derivatives made from conventional corn, soybeans, and canola. Stay away from these silent killers and choose certified organic, non-GMO verified and locally-grown foods that are produced without biotechnology.

Microwave Popcorn

Microwave popcorn is lined with carcinogenic chemicals and so is a chemical in the popcorn itself, which creates the artificial butter flavor. Make your own organic popcorn the old-fashioned way.

Canned Goods

Most cans are lined with a product called bisphenol-A (BPA) – a chemical known to have links to breast cancer, reproductive problems, heart disease and other illnesses. Many plastic goods, thermal paper, water lines, and many dental composites also contain BPA. Stick to fresh or frozen vegetables that have no added ingredients.

Grilled Red Meat

Consuming grilled red meat can increase the cancer risks. When grilled, a sugar molecule in the meat is released and attacks the cells. Thus, causes inflammation and increases cancer risk.

Refined Sugar

The biggest cancer causing food is high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and other refined sugars. Sugar spikes insulin levels and promotes cancer growth. Since the majority of the sugar supply in the U.S. is made using genetically modified (GMO) sugar beets, a healthier option is organic honey, coconut sugar, or maple sugar. Now that oncologists are using diabetes medication to fight cancer cells, undoubtedly, mutated cancer cells love sugar.

Salted, Pickled, and Smoked Foods

Preservatives, such as nitrates, are added to pickled and smoked foods to prolong shelf life. The additives used in processed foods can accumulate in your body,  damage the cellular level and lead to diseases like cancer. (Note: By pickled foods we don’t mean the fermented foods you make at home.)

Soda and Carbonated Beverages

Sodas are a major cancer causing food. Filled with high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), dyes, and a host of other chemicals, they are very bad for every aspect of your health. If you see buzz words like “diet”, “low-fat”, “fat-free”, or ‘sugar-free” then those missing items are likely to be replaced with chemicals. Diet foods are loaded with artificial sweeteners, artificial colors and flavors, and more.

White Flour

A refined flour does not have any nutritional value. The glycemic index for white flour is very high and it is rich in carbohydrates.  Simple sugars (like refined carbohydrates) are the preferred fuel source for cancer.

Farmed Fish

More than 60% of the salmon consumed in the United States comes from a farming operation where they are treated with antibiotics, pesticides, and other carcinogenic chemicals. Farmed fish also don’t have as much omega-3 as wild salmon. Always choose a wild version instead.

Hydrogenated Oils

Vegetable oils are chemically extracted from their source and contain trans fats, which is considered to be the worst type of fat. They also have unhealthy omega-6 fats and have been proven to alter the structure of our cell membranes.
