Millions of people, worldwide, when experiencing pain and body ache, immediately reach for drugs to ease the pain. “Turmeric and curcumin, the most active constituent of the spice, have been the subject of thousands of studies. This research shows that curcumin has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties as well as antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and immune modulating activities.”
Scientific Evidence on Turmeric as an Alternative to Ibuprofen
One study, which was conducted in Thailand in 2014, found that curcumin extract worked about as well as ibuprofen to relieve pain among people with osteoarthritis. This study included 367 primary knee osteoarthritis patients and 185 and 182 patients were randomly assigned into turmeric extracts and ibuprofen groups, respectively. The results were surprising, turmeric extract was as effective as Ibuprofen, but with fewer gastrointestinal reports.
The Alternative and Complementary Medicine Journal published a study, according to which turmeric is an effective alternative to ibuprofen for osteoarthritis. 109 patients with knee osteoarthritis were part of this study. Some of the patients were given 800 mg of Ibuprofen, while others received 2000 mg of turmeric a day for six weeks.
After 6 weeks, improvements in their performance were measured. Both groups showed improvements, but the turmeric group had slightly better performance and a higher level of satisfaction.
Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties. Moreover, it is a safe and affordable ingredient.

Why Is Turmeric Still Not FDA Approved?
